History

Fencing originated in Spain and was refined and developed in Italy and France in the late 18th century. It has been featured at every edition of the Modern Olympics since their inception in 1896, and currently boasts one of the lowest injury rates of any Olympic sport.

Competition

Fencing competitions are held around the world from the club-level to the world and Olympic level.

Fencers stand opposite each other in an “en garde” stance and begin matches with a call of “Fence!” from a referee. Fencers attempt to score a “touch” by hitting with the point of their weapon in Foil and Epee, and with the edge of their weapon in Sabre. “Bouts” are fenced to 5 or 15 touches and last for a maximum of 3 minutes.

Appeal

Fencing’s aspects of athleticism, technicality, and strategy make it a sport that appeals to a broad range of participants.

As a low-impact & low-contact sport, fencing is great for older athletes and younger athletes alike.
